Grounding is a way to bring yourself to the present moment. A reset that leaves you feeling centered and in control. It restores your stability, leaving you feeling capable of dealing with whatever comes your way.
This post offers you six easy ways that you can ground yourself.
Here are 6 ideas you can use to ground yourself.
- Moving meditation – try a walk or another activity like coloring that can be done automatically and without much thought.
- Bring your awareness to your breath or try box breathing. See how below.
- Drink cool water or run your hands under cool water.
- Walk barefoot on the grass. This is called Earthing and you can read about it here.
- Hug a tree – Allow this contact to bring you calm. This is my favorite!
- Get outside! Just being outdoors in nature is a great way to give yourself a reset.
Ground Yourself with Box Breathing – How to do Box Breathing:
Box breathing is a simple technique of bringing awareness to your breath.
Begin with breathing in for a count of four and then hold your breath for a count of four.
Exhale for a count of four and then hold at the bottom of your exhale for a count of four before inhaling again.
Repeat.
Practice will make it flow so don’t worry if it feels a little forced at first.
Using these Techniques
There’s a lot of ways that you might work these simple ways to ground yourself into your day. For example, during a lunch break, you might try one or more of them if your day hasn’t been going smoothly.
When you’re at home after you’ve put in a long day. Maybe going outside and spending a bit of time in your yard is a way for you to bring grounding to your day.
When you’re feeling like you just need a break, you can excuse yourself for a few minutes to do a bit of box breathing.
If there’s a tree in your yard, find a little time to hug it. This one never fails to bring a smile to my face and a bit of peace to my heart.
If you have a chance to put your bare feet on the ground when things are feeling a little wonky, give that a try and see how you feel after doing it.
There’s a lot of opportunity throughout the day to bring a little bit of grounding into your life. See how many opportunities you can find.
