There’s a certain sadness to late summer for this green witch.
The air is still thick with humidity some days and the sun washes over everything until late in the day, but the cool nights whisper hints of the changes that are coming.
I feel this turning in my bones.
The fall is coming, just not yet.
There’s still time to wring every bit of joy from this season. Time to celebrate late summer with simple seasonal rituals that help us enjoy the unique magick of August.
As witches, the fall season gets a lot of our attention. Samhain especially. But for me, August is the prelude to the season of the witch.
A sun kissed, warm honey hug before the cold and dark arrive.
Through simple seasonal rituals, we can gather the season’s gifts, ground ourselves in gratitude, and carry its wisdom into the turning season. Here are four simple practices to help you honor this fleeting, magickal moment.
How to Celebrate Late Summer
1. The Last Golden Hour Walk
At least once this week, take a walk during golden hour.
Let it be leisurely. No devices or headphones. Just you and your curiosity about what’s happening in the natural world right now.
As you stroll along, silently ask what you need to enjoy right now before the changes come. Let yourself be guided to whatever it is.
After your walk, you might want to light a candle, say a prayer of gratitude and journal your thoughts about what summer means to you and what summer wisdom you’ll carry with you into the fall season. This might be my favorite way to celebrate late summer.
2. A Simple Summer’s End Tea Ceremony
Brew yourself a cup of tea.
Use whatever type you have on hand or choose the kind you enjoy most.
Stir in a bit of honey if you wish.
As it steeps, speak into your cup:
“I gather joy. I embrace this moment. I take summer’s wisdom with me into the next season.”
Or write something of your own.
Drink your tea slowly as you contemplate the summer season’s gifts.
3. Celebrate Late Summer with Starry Night Gratitude
On a clear night, go outside. You can lay back on the grass or view the sky from your porch. If you’re not able to get outdoors, then choose a spot by an open window for this.
Bring to mind what you’re truly grateful for. This might be something big or small. Maybe even drawing something from your ritual to celebrate your inner harvest.
Speak out your gratitude to the sky, knowing that the stars are receiving your words.
4. Reflect on Your Growth
Grab your journal and light a candle.
Reflect on the summer season.
- What did you cultivate in your life this season?
- What did you grow intentionally? What grew that wasn’t intentional?
- What wisdom have I gained that I’ll take with me into the fall season?
- What will I leave behind at the turning of the seasons?

We Pause Here Before the Descent into Fall
August invites us to stay with summer just a little longer.
To notice how the bees still work the flower blossoms and how the light looks just before the sun sets each evening. To notice the sounds of the night.
To be mindful in these small nameless moments that align us to the rhythm of Mother Earth.
When we honor these moments, we carry the wisdom of the season with us, into whatever comes next.
For now though, we can pause and just be fully here, inside the wonder that is late summer.
Where August’s unique magick reminds us that every breath is a blessing and each new day is reason enough to celebrate.
How will you celebrate late summer?
Blessed be, friends.
