Witch, You Have a Jar Problem (And It’s Okay)

Here at Ravynwood, we fully embrace the ideas of reduce, reuse, recycle. With that comes some challenges. Clutter is one of them.

Especially glass jars.

The clutter that comes with sustainability is common in green witch life, but I rarely see anyone paying much attention to it.

If you’re like me, you’ve got a stash of empty jars tucked into every available corner—mason jars, little spice ones, cute yogurt pots, those fancy jam jars you just knew would be perfect for something someday. We reuse. We repurpose. It’s part of who we are.

We’re witches. We don’t just throw things away when they’ve served their original purpose.

We honor the lifecycle of a thing. We see the magick in reusing what we already have. But… let’s be real. That reverence can turn into chaos, quickly.

I’ve opened a cabinet door and had to dodge an avalanche of jars more than once. And I know I’m not alone. I see you, friend.

So if your sacred storage room has become a chaotic one, here’s what I’ve been doing to bring order back into my storage—while still honoring the values I hold close.

Step One:  Let’s Reframe

You’re not messy. You’re not a hoarder. (I’ve been called that more than once, how about you?)

You’re resourceful. You’re creative. You’re doing your best to live in alignment with nature. That quality deserves to be seen and acknowledged.

But if your tools (and yes, jars are tools!) don’t have a home, they can start to feel like clutter instead of blessings. But we can fix that.

Sort What You Saved with Intention

Before you toss them all into a box and hope for the best, let’s introduce some structure to the madness:

  • Group by size – jelly jars, pints, quarts, wide-mouths, odd sized ones.

  • Decide what they’re for – spell jars? Dry storage? Ferments? Crafts?

  • Let some go – keep the useful ones, not every single one.

And if one is cracked, chipped, or just not something you actually reach for? Release it. (Or turn it into a hand poured candle for one last incarnation.)

Storage Ideas – Cute & Functional

Now the fun part—finding creative ways to store your jars so you can see them, reach them, and actually use them.

✅ Crates & Boxes

Repurpose old apple crates or wooden wine boxes. Stack them. Label them. Let them become their own little jar altar. I love the way wooden crates look, so I’ve used this method.

✅ Wall-Mounted Racks

Spice racks. Wine racks. Shallow shelves. These give your collection a proper display without taking up table space. Check your vertical space for additional storage options, especially if you have high ceilings.

✅ Under-Shelf Hangers

Yep, you can use the underside of a shelf! Hang jar rings or even small jars using their lids screwed into wood. They look witchy and save space. This is especially good for reusing jars for storage. You can even set this up in a workshop for storing small parts like hardware.

✅ Clear Storage Bins

Toss them into clear plastic bins by type, slap a label on the front, and call it done. This is especially good if your jars live in a garage or basement where you want to keep dust out.Clear bins allow you to see what’s in there, so I highly recommend using them.

✅ Behind-the-door Organizers

You know those pantry door racks? Perfect for holding smaller jars or those you use often for spells and tinctures. I love this option for walk-in pantry storage.

✅ Rolling Cart Shrine

Dedicate a rolling utility cart to your jar obsession. You can move it to your kitchen, apothecary station, or altar setup as needed. This can be a great option for your home apothecary.

 Make it Sacred

Once you’ve got your jar situation under control, take a moment to smudge the space or light a candle. You’re not just tidying up—you’re making room for clearer energy, smoother magick, and way less stress.

Your goal isn’t to be minimalist or create Pinterest-perfect storage. It’s about being in right relationship with your tools and your space. You might need to experiment with what works for you.

A Final Note

You don’t have to keep everything. That thing you’ve been saving for six years but have never found a use for? Thank it. Release it. Maybe drop it off at a thrift store or donate it to a friend who’ll use it for canning peaches this summer (maybe they’ll drop some off for you!).

Let your jars be useful—not a burden.
