During these last days of August, there’s an unmistakable shift that happens in the natural world.
This shift is inviting us into the witch’s descent.

We see it in the harvest.
This time of gathering before things die away.
We feel it as the trees slowly pull their energy inward and the perennial plants pull their energy into their roots.
We live it, year after year, as summer gives way to fall, and fall carries us into the dark months ahead.
The descent is when nature begins turning inward, and we’re called to do the same.
For witches and those walking a nature-based path, this isn’t a time to push forward.
Instead, it’s a time to tune in and listen to the wisdom Mother Earth offers us.
A chance to slow down, even just a little.
A chance to reflect on what’s ready to be released and what’s essential in our lives.
We’re reminded that shadow isn’t something to be feared. It’s simply another part of the journey, and we can approach it with curiosity and openness.
What Does Descent Mean to the Witch?
The descent is a return.
A time when we come back around the wheel into remembrance, reclaiming and renewal.
This is when we do things like:
- Clearing off your altar and lighting a single candle, just to sit with the growing dark as a symbol of the changes ahead.
- Gathering seeds from the garden and from your soul in preparation for the next season.
- Tuning in and listening more than speaking so you can hear the messages we’re sent.
- Holding boundaries by saying no. But always with love.
- Letting go of anything you’ve outgrown or anything that has become cumbersome.
Descent is an opportunity to regain your quiet power.
It’s time to sit with this inward shift and all it means for you.
