How to Release What You’ve Outgrown

Not everything that helped you grow is meant to stay.

This is a tender truth.

The path of witchery is one of constant learning and growth. Nature is our best teacher since we move through the world with the rhythms of Mother Earth. Fall’s unique wisdom shows you how you can release what you’ve outgrown.

Outside the leaves are drying out and fluttering to the ground. Their farewells proceeded with a burst of color. Even the breeze and soil carry a scent of endings.

Harvest season is winding down and nature is showing us how to clear space, make room and lay aside what’s not serving us with gratitude.

This post explores how to release what you’ve outgrown.

Why is it Hard to Release What You’ve Outgrown?

If letting go were easy to do, we’d all be doing it the minute we needed it.

But that’s not how things work. We hold on, sometimes longer than we should to things that no longer support us.

We cling out of habit or guilt.

Or out of old patterns, relationships, versions of ourselves that once served us. Those things kept us safe and they gave us growth at the time.

But as we grow, we outgrow them.

We’re not meant to drag yesterday’s “stuff” into tomorrow. We can look to the trees for guidance on this. They don’t cling to the leaves. They let them go.

If you’re feeling a stirring that’s urging you to let something go, know that this is your inner wisdom, aligning to the season’s shift and prompting you to release what you’ve outgrown.

Signs It’s Time to Let Go

There’s not always a grand sign that it’s time to release these things.

Very often the signals are subtle, like the way fall breezes tug on leaves.

You may be ready to let things fall away if:

You feel drained by something that once lit you up.

You keep swirling around the same lesson, no matter how much “work” you’ve done.

You’ve evolved, but your surroundings haven’t shifted with you.

You sense resistance to it.

You daydream about a new path you haven’t yet dared to step onto.

This is your reminder:  You are allowed to outgrow things. Even things that have served you well. It’s ok. It’s necessary.

Your Growth Moves in Seasons

We forget sometimes that growth isn’t linear. Growth circles around, spirals, and flows. There are seasons to plant, seasons to blossom, seasons to harvest, and seasons to let go.

Witchcraft, at its heart, is about transformation. And transformation always includes release. Think of composting: yesterday’s scraps becoming tomorrow’s soil.

What falls away is never wasted. It becomes the fertile ground for what comes next.

The descent into fall created a sense of darkness closing in, but it’s really about trusting what you can’t see. Trusting the process of one thing ending while another begins.

Release like the trees.

You’re Not Alone

I walk this same path of aligning to the seasons, just like you.

This fall, I’m setting down what doesn’t serve me. Rhythms I can no longer follow, versions of me that I don’t need to be anymore, old stories that no longer define me.

Letting things go isn’t always comfortable.

But, it is liberating.

When we let things go with intention, we create space for new things to come into our lives. New wisdom, new opportunities, and new magick to explore.

Bringing It All Together

Fall reminds us that endings are sacred transitions.

Every leaf that falls is proof that letting go is part of the cycle of life, and that beauty lives in this season of release as much as in other seasons.

So as the trees become bare, ask yourself: What am I ready to release? What part of me is waiting to be released?

Sit with this and let your answers rise from within you.

Are you ready to release what you’ve outgrown this fall?

How will you release what you’ve outgrown?

Blessed be.
