Green Witch Life: The Unique Magick of September

September usually arrives softly here at Ravynwood. No fanfare, and you can hardly tell the difference between the last days of August and the beginning of September.

Sure, the air feels a little different and the light changes even more than it does in August.

But for me, the most noticeable shift is that sense of being in-between. It still looks like summer, but it feels ever more like fall.

Almost a still point between this and that, making it the perfect place to pause and reflect while soaking in the unique magick of September.

September is a Season of Shift

The sun slants lower and there’s an edge on the air now that the mornings are cooler. The trees have lost that vibrant green of summer and turned into the tired greens that precedes the colorful display of fall leaves.

Transformation in the natural world happens one thing at a time and that’s a lesson for us all.

Out in the enchanted wood, the scent of soil is clearer now and there’s a few new fallen leaves scattered around on the forest floor.

The leaves begin to show some color now.

There’s a whisper from Mother Earth that the time to gather is here as we head toward the second harvest festival on the Wheel of the Year.

The birds are gathering up, preparing for the long flight to their winter destinations. Some have already left.

You can see the shifting season and you can feel it. Somewhere in our bones is encoded what it means to live in alignment with this season, even if we don’t live it like our ancestors did.

Still, we can tap into the unique magick of this time. Noticing our internal shifts might be where we begin. Looking for signs in the natural world of summer’s last hurrah, while also seeing the first signs of fall’s coming.

There’s a balance of things, but also an invitation into what’s coming.

In the Ravynwood way, we use this seasonal pivot as a mirror. What we see in nature, we reflect in our own rhythm.

The Magick of September:  Record Your Seasonal Observations

You might already know that I’m a big fan of keeping a Book of Seasons.

If you don’t already have one, this is the perfect time to begin one.

September here in the foothills of the Appalachians where I live is a time of quiet transformation. There’s misty mornings with fog that lingers in the valleys, afternoons bright with sun and as the month goes on, more color will come into the tree leaves.

Goldenrod and asters brighten the edges of every field, and cicadas and crickets are the evening soundtrack.

Acorns and black walnuts fall to the ground where busy squirrels collect them for their winter stash. Apples in the orchards have rosy cheeks and there’s sometimes hints of woodsmoke from the early hearth fires of the season as the nights grow cooler.

There’s a sense of abundance at the beginning of the month that will dwindle just a bit as we reach the end of the month. The fullness of summer gives way to the inevitable decline as we move fully into fall.

These short notes like what I’ve written here can be the beginnings of your Book of Seasons. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Just your authentic viewpoint is enough.

Tip:  Five Below has spiral bound sketchbooks that are perfect for creating a Book of Seasons.

The Equinox:  Sacred Balance

The Fall Equinox arrives during the third week of the month and is an annual reminder from the natural world about balance. Equal times of light and dark make it the perfect time to assess your balance.

  • What does balance mean for you?
  • Do you feel balanced?
  • What’s filling you up right now? What’s draining your energy?

These questions can be a starting point for deciding what you can set aside now. Like the trees that drop their leaves, what can you let go of?

Create a simple ritual to symbolize what you’re letting go of as a way to create space in your life for what comes next.

Tip:  The Magick of September Workbook has inspiration for you including the Wild Balance Ritual to help you figure out what needs to shift.

Making It Practical: Witchcraft as a Way of Being

Living your magick is something we believe in wholeheartedly here at Ravynwood.

Rituals, spells, and sabbats are only part of the practice here. The way I move through the world and through each day is how I live my magick everyday.

It’s in how I treat myself and others. How I stay grounded when the world feels heavy or scary. Small practices I infuse into my daily routines to bring magick to the mundane. It’s a series of simple choices aligned to my values.

September invites you to begin again if you’re not feeling the joy and magick in your own life. Take a pause and decide what matters and what doesn’t and then begin aligning your life accordingly.

Cultivate what matters and release what doesn’t.

In Closing:  The Magick of September

September offers a powerful opportunity for reflection and alignment.

By tuning into the natural world’s shifts, acknowledging our own internal changes, and intentionally cultivating what truly matters, we can live a more magickal and grounded life, embracing the beauty and wisdom of the season.

How will you tap into the magick of September?

Blessed be.
