5 Ways to Cultivate a Positive Mindset

Cultivating a positive mindset can help you feel happier, healthier, and more successful in life. Living your best witch life will probably look different for you than it does for everyone else, but there are a few tools that can help support living your best life. Cultivating a positive mindset is one of those tools that will support you whether you’re on a healing journey, a spiritual journey or even if your everyday life.

While it might seem easier for some people to have a more positive outlook on life, we’re all able to channel our own inner peace and find a mindset that is as positive as we can make it. To cultivate a positive mindset, there are several things you can do. Here are 5 ways to start changing your mindset and thinking more positively.


1. Live in the present, not the past or the future

The present moment is made up of time that you won’t ever get back, so why waste it thinking about the past, or even the future? Thinking about negative experiences from the past can damage your peace in the present, and focusing too much on your dreams of the future can cause you to lose focus on taking action now.

Pro-tip:  Become aware of the past or present sneaking into your thoughts.  Becoming aware is the first step to making sure you remain in the now. Awareness is always the first step toward change.


2. Practice gratitude every day

It doesn’t matter how or when you do it, but find time every day to be grateful for your life and what you have. This could be something that you build into your regular routine, in the morning or before you go to bed in the evening. It could be something you do mentally while practicing meditation or yoga. Getting into the habit of being grateful throughout the day will help you create a more positive mindset.

Pro tip:  It’s my opinion that if you did nothing else to change your life except practice gratitude, you could totally change your life for the better. Being in a mindset of gratitude will bring more into your life that you can be grateful for!  Start small if you need to, just start!


3. Don’t dwell on negative thoughts

The more you think about something, the more of your mind it will occupy and you’ll get stuck in a cycle of continuing to think about it. Learning to recognize when you have negative thoughts is a great first step on the road to a positive mindset. Similarly, don’t spend too much time around people who tend to fill your mind with negative thoughts or only have negative things to say.

Pro tip:  When we move away from negative thoughts, we sometimes have to move away from people who are negative also.  Don’t be afraid to make that step.  It can be difficult for sure, but it makes room in your life for people who are positive and will have a positive affect on you.


4. Fake it ‘til you make it

If you don’t feel positive at the moment, don’t worry. If you have the willpower to start being more positive, you can do it. Now, it takes more than willpower to shift your mindset, but if you’re vigilant about doing something to switch negative thoughts to positive ones, it will help you cultivate the skill.

A simple way to begin is just by behaving in a more positive manner – paying compliments to people, trying to find good rather than bad, and looking for the silver linings.

Pro tip:  Watch your thoughts and immediately stop any negative ones when they pop up.  Replace these with something positive.  For example, if the thought pops up that you’re not where you want to be in life, change that around to be “I have come so far”. See how that feels?  Embrace the spaces in between what you want and what you have now.


5. Learn to love yourself

If you lack self-esteem, there’s no time like the present to start building it up. Practice self-care and focus on all the things you like about yourself. Take compliments when you’re given them. Surround yourself with positive social media and positive people.
